Another redevelopment project is moving foward in one of the community’s targeted brownfields areas. The former St. John’s Church, located in the 1700 block of Mulberry Street, is currently undergoing an extensive $2.2 million renovation. Vacant campus structures are transitioning into affordable housing and community-focused space. Plans include 19 apartment units in the school building, a child care facility in the lower-level gym, and an event space in the former church. The City of Waterloo was able to assist in eliminating environmental concerns when officials expended EPA Brownfields Multipurpose Grant funds to conduct an asbestos containing materials (ACM) survey. The Iowa Economic Development Authority also awarded the project $1.2 million in historic preservation tax credits.
