Construction of a new 4-story condo building on the former Grand Hotel site continues. The project will feature 68 apartments (28 one-bedroom and 40 two-bedroom units) with granite/quartz counter tops, Nest thermostats, high-efficiency appliances, and balconies. Additional amenities include underground parking and a community workout room. The developer expects an opening date of 2016. The City acquired the blighted property along a key downtown gateway corridor in 2010. Environmental investigations completed under its EPA Brownfields Assessment Grants cleared a path for re-use.
Grand Crossing Condominiums is located in the heart of a redevelopment resurgence in Waterloo’s urban core. Nearby brownfields success stories include the following recent transformations: a former commercial bakery into a brewery, former John Deere structures and land into a 30-acre business park featuring advanced manufacturing, research and development, education, and commercial operations, and several former underutilized commercial and residential properties spread across two city blocks into a community recreation center. These projects collectively continue to transform the area in accordance with the City’s adopted Downtown Master Plan.
