The City purchased a vacant 2-story commercial structure located along the Cedar River at 801-805 Commercial Street. The underutilized property formerly contained the Cascaden Manufacturing Company and other uses such as a blacksmith shop, paper weaving for egg cases, an auto parts and battery manufacturer, and an auto garage. The property also had a 250-gallon gasoline tank located in the adjacent roadway from approximately 1918-1962. EPA Brownfields Assessment Grants permitted the City to complete a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment to satisfy All Appropriate Inquiry (AAI) requirements prior to acquiring the 0.193-acre site. City officials anticipate the property will redevelop into riverfront housing.
